It works perfectly everywhere I've tested:

  Mac OS 10, gcc 3.3 from gcc.gnu.org (the original trouble maker)
  Mac OS 10, gcc 3.3 build 1493 from Apple
  Redhat 7.3, gcc 2.96
  Redhat 8.0, gcc 3.2

I went ahead and removed the ugly workaround in the boost CVS.
