I may have answers to two of your suggestions/questions...

I believe that can be disabled.  Try opening the preferences dialog (Edit
menu, Preferences).  In the Editor tree, select 'Smart Editing'.  In the
pane on the right deselect the option 'Show edge line/Highlight characters
beyond edge line'.  I believe that will help you.

Some of this can be modified.  Open the preferences dialog and check the
'Appearance' category.  You can change the number of projects and files
shown.
