Thanks Todd for this. I've now sorted out my problems.

My first one was a permissions one. I tried to sort this out on my Mac by
using the Info window to add my name to those who had read and write
permissions for the repository directory as it had root as the owner (I
think it was necessary to set it up in this way) without realising I had to
change this for all the contained directories and files. I've now used chown
in Terminal to set me recursively as the owner.

I still couldn't get a new file to register on the repository. I added it
from Source Control on Contents but then when I tried to commit I kept on
getting the 'No SCC handler found for ...' message. I discovered from a
comment on the AS Community website that all it needed was a Refresh Status
and the commit worked fine.
