ActiveState Announces Focus on Dynamic Languages
New Industry Whitepaper: "Dynamic Languages: Ready for the Next
Challenges, By Design"
VANCOUVER, BC, 2004/07/27

ActiveState, the leading provider of tools and services for dynamic
languages such as Perl, PHP, Python, Tcl and XSLT, today announced a
major positioning initiative that underscores its commitment to users of
open source scripting languages.

The initiative introduces a streamlined product offering built around
the company's industry-standard languages distributions, ActivePerl,
ActivePython and ActiveTcl. The new line, which encompasses professional
tools, support packages and OEM licensing agreements, simplifies product
and support decisions for users ranging from individual programmers to
large enterprises. In addition, ActiveState has launched a new corporate
identity platform, website and tagline-Dynamic Tools for Dynamic
Languages.

A new whitepaper by David Ascher, ActiveState's Chief Technologist,
expands on the company's vision. The paper, entitled "Dynamic Languages:
Ready for the Next Challenges, By Design," updates Tcl creator John
Ousterhout's important 1998 piece, "Scripting: Higher-Level Programming
for the 21st Century" to identify the unique strengths of these
languages in today's IT environment, and highlight their growing
importance in effective development strategies.

Says Ascher, "These languages solve real programming challenges, proving
themselves both in spite of-and thanks to-their independence from
corporate platform strategies. The aim of this paper is to articulate
the situations where dynamic languages are highly appropriate, so
decision makers, project managers and CIOs have the information they
need to make strategic language choices."

Other highlights of the paper include programming language categories
and definitions, myths about dynamic languages, and predictions for
future opportunities and challenges facing the industry.

Further supporting the new initiative, today ActiveState also announced
the release of Komodo 3.0, its award-winning IDE for dynamic languages.
