Re: Upgrade paths and continued support | Re: Upgrade paths and continued support
Thanks, Rick -

My goal is to run Apple's latest Darwin on a PC. To accomplish that, I've read that it's fir
st necessary to have Darwin up & running.

Apple's Darwin 8 ISO fails to install on my test PC, but OpenDarwin 7.2.1 installs and runs
fine.

So now I'd like to download Apple's latest Darwin sources, build a working version, and upgr
ade to that.

In asking about "support" here, I was simply looking for some tips, pointers, and/or referen
ces to documentation, FAQ, etc., with regard to that upgrade process.

Given the age and discontinued status of OpenDarwin, any detailed help would be greatly appr
eciated.

Thanks again.

Although it isn't OpenDarwin, you can download Darwin8 from http://developer.apple.com/opens
ource and install that on some generic P4 systems. Not a lot of network cards are supported,
but I've found that a 3C905 works ok.

The iso install image is under Darwin8.0 binaries. You can then build newer stuff from the n
ewer sources, although I've only done that for the kernel. (btw, the kernels in PPC sources
build for generic P4 systems)

I haven't tried to build X.
