There are still a few legitimate and cheap options, even without  
resorting to hacked Mac OS X versions:

- Get Darwin 8.0.1 running in qemu. On my new hardware not yet  
supported by most OSS distributions, I've got a few OS's up and  
running at almost native speed.

- Ask a friend with Mac OS X to compile a few critical parts. The  
tools coming with Xcode 2.x should compile x86 stuff just fine, even  
on PPC.

- Buy an older Mac, like an Rev. C iMac. Unsupported because of  
lacking Firewire, but works with simple hacks just fine.

- Use Linux or some BSD to set up a cross compilation environment.  
Gcc really shines here.

Mac OS Forge is the third incarnation of Apple's community effort.  
Shutting down the earlier ones is not exactly the best way to make  
friends.

Nevertheless, one brave soul runs GNU Darwin and it looks like a few  
others joined: <http://www.gnu-darwin.org/> 

Additionally, those  Mac-OS-X-on-generic-PC hackers released their  
kernel efforts to the public recently, as there's obviously no longer  
a need to hide them: <http://semthex.freeflux.net/blog/?start=10>   
Those people have collected a lot of knowledge about how the lower  
levels of Darwin work.
