Re: Upgrade paths and continued support | Re: Upgrade paths and continued support
Thanks, Markus -

I need details of the upgrade process from OpenDarwin 7.2.1 to the most recent version of Ap
ple's x86 Darwin. Any specific tips, or links to documentation, would be most helpful, as fo
llow-up to your suggestions:

> - Get Darwin 8.0.1 running in qemu.

That sounds like a good idea. What steps would I follow to accomplish that, having just gott
en OpenDarwin 7.2.1 installed and running?

> - Ask a friend with Mac OS X to compile a few critical parts.

I do have Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger running on an old G3 iMac. Once I install XCode, what would yo
u suggest that I compile?

> - Buy an older Mac, like an Rev. C iMac. Unsupported because of lacking Firewire

My iMac does have firewire, and I plan to keep it running Tiger. Would you please explain ho
w I can use this to help accomplish the goal of running the latest Darwin on x86?

> - Use Linux or some BSD to set up a cross compilation environment. Gcc really shines here.

Yes, I do have several Linux distros running on a few PCs. But OpenDarwin 7.2.1 already come
s with gcc installed. So exactly how would I leverage Linux to help upgrade Darwin?

GNU Darwin is based on an even older version of OpenDarwin (6.x), and they reject upgrading
to more recent versions of Darwin, until Apple provides a completely Free Open Source Softwa
re solution.

I'm more open-minded, and willing to use any legitimate means to get the latest Darwin runni
ng on a PC.

On the other hand, I'd like to run an X11 server with a window manager like KDE, GNOME, Xfc
e, or even TWM, rather than a pirated copy of OS X.

There are enough FOSS apps available to make x86 Darwin a viable solution. My own focus, as
a computer support provider, is to promote the use of free, open source software.

Thanks again for your help. I'd greatly appreciate more detail, as noted above.

Really? What kind of snobism would that be?

There are still a few legitimate and cheap options, even without
resorting to hacked Mac OS X versions:

- Get Darwin 8.0.1 running in qemu. On my new hardware not yet
supported by most OSS distributions, I've got a few OS's up and
running at almost native speed.

- Ask a friend with Mac OS X to compile a few critical parts. The
tools coming with Xcode 2.x should compile x86 stuff just fine, even
on PPC.

- Buy an older Mac, like an Rev. C iMac. Unsupported because of
lacking Firewire, but works with simple hacks just fine.

- Use Linux or some BSD to set up a cross compilation environment.
Gcc really shines here.

Mac OS Forge is the third incarnation of Apple's community effort.
Shutting down the earlier ones is not exactly the best way to make
friends.

Nevertheless, one brave soul runs GNU Darwin and it looks like a few
others joined: <http://www.gnu-darwin.org/>

Additionally, those Mac-OS-X-on-generic-PC hackers released their
kernel efforts to the public recently, as there's obviously no longer
a need to hide them: <http://semthex.freeflux.net/blog/?start=10>
Those people have collected a lot of knowledge about how the lower
levels of Darwin work.
