www.funduc.com distributes Registry toolkit - this is registry
editor with FInd/REplace feature.
	Try it to trace a partial string such as "msi".
	Run cmd->  net start to see whether msi was setup as service "net
stop" it

I believe I have cleaned the registry of the AS entries.  I looked under 
HKLM/Software and HKCU/Software for it, is there anywhere else, like 
HKCR??

Try this: Clean up from the registry all traces of PDK 4.0/3.0 ... , Clear 
all directories of previous installations and then after reBooting, 
reinstall, reBoot, try running. (OK! Ok! your problem comes by the time 
you are in the installation)... My guess is the cleanup utility would do 
that only.
 
Caution!! Take a copy of Registry and store it away before tinkering with 
it.
