I don't use the PDK to compile tools, so other commentators may have better knowledge.  Hope
fully this helps at least a bit, however.

The kernel and core components of 64 bit Windows XP is the closest to the 64-bit version of 
Windows Server 2003, so I would expect XP would be your best bet.  Notably, there are greate
r differences between the core components in the 32 bit versions of Windows XP and 32 bit se
rver 2003 than between their 64-bit counterparts.  You'll find rather significant difference
s between Vista and Server 2003 (though the Vista core is similar to Server 2008, when you n
eed to go in that direction).

Generically, I have had less trouble getting various scripting languages to do the right thi
ng on Server 2003 than I have on Vista.  The new permission/security model under Vista may b
e a step in the right direction, but it can be downright intrusive at times.

One side note, before putting the effort into 64-bit XP, check to see that your hardware has
 drivers available for it.  Unavailable drivers has been the single greatest source of troub
le I have personally experienced with it.

Hi all,

The company I work for produces a bunch of compiled utilities for our
customers, and we're currently using PDK to compile for Windows,
Solaris, Linux, etc. Recently the 64-bit Windows 2003 server I've been
using to compile on has been reallocated so I no longer have access to
it, and I'm looking at a replacement 64-bit Windows.

My question is: does anyone know if PDK apps compiled on say, 64-bit
Windows XP or 64-bit Vista will run on 64-bit Windows 2003? There's
obviously a fairly large price difference between the desktop and
server versions of the OS, and if I can get away with just buying the
desktop OS but know for sure it will run on the server OS, I'd be happy.

While I know this works in the 32-bit realm, I know the 64-bit realm
is a little more trickier under Windows.

Any thoughts/feedback would be most appreciated.
