Does anyone know how to check the status of a networked printer using perl?

We have several networked printers that stop working for some unknown 
reasons and in order to fix them, we have to delete the port on the NT 
server, re-add the port then re-connect the printer again.

I would like to write a script that can monitor the printers and when the 
printer status is "unavailable" send an alert to our administrators.
