I wondered whether this "print.pm" (which I've never heard of) might still 
be functional on perl 5.8.

But I can't find it anywhere. My build (638) of ActivePerl 5.6 doesn't have 
it - there's no mention of it at 
http://ppm.activestate.com/BuildStatus/5.6-P.html , and I couldn't find it 
on CPAN either.

If it's a pure perl module you could try copying it across from your 5.6 
build to your 5.8 build and see how it goes.
