I was thinking maybe just get the VC++ compiler and compile my "hello world"
program with it, using the perl58 lib shipped with the perl install. I'm not
tied to the gcc compiler. So, I installed the beta (free) version of Visual
Studio, but I think it would take me many hours just to get the point where
I can even TRY to compile my 2-line-"hello
world"-perl-source-converted-to-C-code program. I thought I'd find a button
that said "Compile", but no such luck. A lot of the Help is not even
available yet, so I'm pretty much in the dark.
BTW, another solution I considered was the AcitveState Perl Developers Kit,
which has a program called PerlApp. It worked OK, but the executable for the
"hello world" was 500K!! Probably just as well; I'd hard pressed to justify
the $ for the PDK just to do this :)
Thanks to you and Rob for your advice, but I think I'll abandon this for
now. Just thought it might be interesting to be able to send some simple
perl programs to others who don't have perl installed on their computer.
Phil
