In fact, there are two patches floating around the archives. [1,2] The
first one I tried [1] did not fix the problem. The second one [2] did. 

I don't know whether the second patch, alone, would have fixed it. If
people are curious, I would be happy to reinstall XML::LibXSLT and find
out. 

(Please let me know because otherwise I will just move on to other
things :-)

Because I am out of my depth when it comes to these things I couldn't
actually figure out how to build the CVS version of gnome-xml (no
configure file?) 

In the end, though, it did not matter. The patch(es) for XML::LibXSLT
fixed the problem.
