Well, the spec doesn't use RFC 2119 wording (maybe it should) but
it's quite clear as to what a conformant stream is. It always says
"foo is a hash reference with these properties: (list)". If you omit
some of those properties, you're not conforming to the spec and will
get implementation-dependent behavior (because error handling hasn't
been strongly enough specified).
