I just realized I did not answer your question very well.  My ever-weaker memory assures me 
my problems were with image uploading, and had nothing to do with ImageMagick.  I have no re
ason to believe that ImageMagick is not safe with PerlEx, and I don't mean to discourage you
 from trying it.

You might sniff out any thread-safety issues with ImageMagick and mod_perl on Apache.  That'
s going to be a more common combination than IM + PerlEx at this point, so you'll probably h
ave better luck finding answers.  If it runs safely under that platform, it's a good bet it 
will get along with PerlEx, too.
