EU-F77 and a Fortran compiler are needed only to build parts of PDL. If
EU-F77 and/or the fortran compiler can't be found, PDL should still build
successfully - but minus some functionality.

The output at
http://ppm.activestate.com/beta/MSWin32-x86/5.8/818/C/CS/CSOE/PDL-2.4.3.d/log-20080712T18442
1.txt
looks very strange to me ... Oh, I see - ExtUtils::F77 is listed as a
pre-requisite. That shouldn't be. I wonder why the 5.10 build doesn't fail
in the same way. I'll take a closer look when I get a chance. (PDL-2.4.4
should be coming out in the not-too-distant future - hence the interest in
how to get this working.)

And I'll have to do a build of PDL with Visual Studio but minus the fortran
compiler to see how it works. Currently, when I build PDL with Visual
Studio, I'm using EU-F77 and MinGW's g77.exe fortran compiler. Hence I don't
get to see some of these aspects.

The layout of
http://ppm.activestate.com/beta/MSWin32-x86/5.10/1000/C/CS/CSOE/PDL-2.4.3.d/log-20080608T194
941.txt
seems to me to all over the place, too - but at least we have:
--------------------------
All tests successful.
Files=104, Tests=768, 25 wallclock secs ( 0.11 usr +  0.39 sys =  0.50 CPU)
Result: PASS
--------------------------

It was apparently unpacked correctly - so at least we've established that my
original request can be ignored :-)

The build at
http://ppm.activestate.com/beta/MSWin32-x64/5.10/1000/C/CS/CSOE/PDL-2.4.3.d/log-20080906T005
753.txt
seems to just stop for no apparent reason. I haven't yet tried building PDL
myself on x64.

Thanks Gisle.

Cheers,
Rob
