thanks for the reply.

Forgot to say what I'm using.

debian unstable/X11/ nvidia drivers/ python 2.1/ pygame 1.4( one that comes 
with debian).

I'm using the command line python in a terminal.

the problem happens with pygame.display.init/quit.

I ran gdb on it, but I have no debugging symbols in there.  it says it dies 
on a free, but not sure where.  I'll have to get all the source for these 
libraries and compile them all with debugging info in them I guess.

I'll try to make a minimal example of where it dies, and post it if I have no 
luck with the debug libraries.
