The website http://scriptedfun.com/ is very good to get the basics.
There is also a very cool tutorial how to write pacman with python and
in the pygame wiki there is good stuff, too. Afterwards you could download
some simple games and if you're wondering "how they did it", just
take a look at the code.

I would say.. just start making a game. This is the best practice.
