I would suggest a separate window entirely, with an overlay to the tools 
menu to open the window.  That would make it easier to move to a 
separate application later in the process.

That's a matter of time and desire to put in that effort, I'm not 
perceiving this as whining :)

Well, I don't really know (for either the bounty or number of available 
people), this is the best place to get that response to those questions. 
  My impression is that there are relatively few applications using 
PyXPCOM, but I don't have any data to back that up.
