Fred,

I think we are going to add some sort of back reference from at least this tool 
to its overlay(s), which should make this sort of thing easier. In the mean 
time, try adding a self.component.request_redraw() to force the redraw right 
after you remove the overlay or set it to not visible or whatever you are doing.

Are you saving a reference to the overlay to add it back later?

Also, your cme script looks just fine.
