Fred,

I now made it so that nan's in scalar fields map to a zero alpha (transparent) 
color value. I think soon we will want to add the ability to add some sort of 
hatched or patterned underlay to image plots, so that these transparent regions 
can show up as hatched regions to highlight that there are nans there. Right now 
you will just see a region filled solid with whatever the bgcolor of the plot is.
