RIght, I'm guilty of not reading far enough into the tip.  Nevertheless, 
I was suggesting that although in-core is a good idea for performance reasons, 
making Tcl_ExprObj() the handler would still allow backward (albeit slower) 
compatibility.  ie.  I can write my application using TIP #266, and have it
include the [unknown] hack if tcl_version != 9.* or whatever to let it work
under 8.3...
