Two things to add here:

1. If you find the former functionality useful, perhaps you could work
on defining and implemeting a TIP (see http://tip.tcl.tk/) for a public
interface version of that functionality.

2. While Tcl/Tk developers must not depend on non-public interfaces,
there have been cases, in the past, where extension authors found the
public interfaces insufficient and, reluctantly, had to make use of
internal interfaces. It would, for those developers at the very least,
be useful to at least know what list to monitor to find discussions
regarding impending internal functionality loss.
