I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was due to nobody having
written the code so far. There are no ideological constraints, and I
know that inaction here reveals just that the current maintainers are
not focussed on this area. :-) We would definitely welcome a patch.

As a matter of interest, which version of Tk will you be targeting? I
only ask because this is the sort of thing that will probably be worth
backporting quite far (and that should be easy; as you know this is not
a part that's changed frequently...)
