I've hoped for a long time that enough little fish will focus
exclusively on the simpler toolset that was first proposed to insulate a
lot of us from that potential disaster.
Markup seems capable of supporting small distributed visions as well as
huge centralized visions, with much lower lock-in though perhaps less
obvious profit.
