This document provides an overview of the kinds of usage permitted with the
Perl Dev Kit (PDK) tools. See the PDK License Agreement
for other licensing information.
Purchasing the PDK Productivity Tools edition entitles the licensee to
use Filter Builder, Graphical Debugger, VBScript Converter, and
Coverage Analyzer. Purchasing the PDK Deployment Tools entitles the
licensee to use PerlApp, PerlCtrl, PerlMSI, PerlNET, PerlSvc, and
PerlTray and to redistribute the packages they create with these tools
(see Licensing and Redistribution of ActiveState Binaries below).
Purchasing the PDK Pro entitles the licensee to use all PDK
tools.
These licenses are permanent, and include minor version updates (e.g.
5.2 to 5.3), but not major version upgrades (e.g. 6.0 to 7.0).
ActiveState's Perl Dev Kit is also available to subscribers of
ActivePerl Pro Studio .
ActivePerl Pro Studio is a subscription-based service which includes
licenses for the latest versions of
PDK Pro and
Komodo IDE .
PDK can be installed on multiple computers and on any supported
platform, so long as the tools are only being used by the licensee.
If you are using the Perl Dev Kit with an evaluation license, the
executables built with PerlApp, PerlCtrl, PerlNET, PerlSvc or PerlTray
will cease to function when your Perl Dev Kit evaluation license expires.
The Perl Dev Kit's builder tools let you provide Perl-based solutions to
your users without requiring them to install Perl. You may freely distribute
.dll files that are output by PerlCtrl, .msi files that are output by
PerlMSI, and .exe files that are output by PerlApp and PerlSvc.
You are allowed to redistribute .NET assemblies generated by PerlNET as long
as you are not exposing Perl as a scripting language to your users. Please
contact sales@ActiveState.com if you require this functionality.
The Perl Dev Kit gives you the ability to bundle your own code into
stand-alone controls and executables. However, it is rare to find a useful
Perl program that does not rely on modules and libraries from either the
standard distribution or CPAN. If you build a stand-alone application or
control that you choose to redistribute, you are responsible for complying
with the licensing of any third party module or library you embed in the
application or control.
While most Perl and CPAN modules permit redistribution under certain terms
(either the Artistic License or the GNU General Public License), you must
understand these terms, as well as the terms of any third party modules or
libraries you embed. If you are not sure if a module or library may be
redistributed, please download the source to that module or library from
(CPAN ) and examine the package for a README
document that clarifies the matter. If it is still not clear, contact
the author or maintainer of the module or library.
